This all started during a routine eye exam in March, 2015, when the optometrist said “you have a giant nevus in your right eye.” A nevus is a mole or birthmark. She said I should be examined by a retinal specialist not only due to its size, but also because it is very close to my optic nerve and macula. She said they it needed to be monitored because it can develop into malignant melanoma. They photographed it for documentation purposes.
I was due to move in a matter of months, so I planned on seeing a retinal specialist as soon as I arrived at my new destination. The nevus is the large dark area noted in the pictures.
